How to measure kids' feet at home

Paper, a wall, a pen, an evening. Two minutes per child, three times a year, and you never guess at a shoe shelf again.

Put a sheet of paper on the floor against a wall. Stand the child on it, heel to the wall, weight on the foot, and mark the tip of the longest toe, which is not always the big toe. Measure from the paper's edge to the mark. Do both feet and keep the longer number; most people have one bigger foot and children are no exception.

Measure in the evening. Feet swell over a day of running, and the shoe has to fit the evening foot. A morning measurement can be half a size optimistic.
